Universal Relevancy: Using The CAMP Method to Train Other Staff

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter: Best Practices

The best practice for any organization is to require that all documentation meets the criteria for high quality clinical documentation regardless of the author. This practice, together with accurate coding practices, ensures that your organization’s data is a true reflection of every assessment made of the patient’s condition and all the services provided.

The CAMP Method for training was developed initially for physicians. However, the 4 steps can be applied universally with minimal modifications. In particular, the clinical documentation function will benefit from training the following individuals or groups using the CAMP Method: mid-level practitioners such as physician assistants and nurse practitioners, health information management professionals, clinical documentation professionals, nurses, and other clinicians including nutritionists, respiratory therapists and lab technicians. Recommendations for modifications of the 4 step process specific to certain groups are included in this chapter.

A significant body of research, listed in this chapter, has established that self-efficacy, the foundation of the CAMP Method, is also effective in training nonphysician clinicians.  Ideally, you should train all caregivers, noncaregivers who document in the medical record, and staff who evaluate the content of the medical record. To ensure optimal results, you will need to adjust the CAMP Method concepts for each group to be trained.
