Volume 2
Step 3: Coaching
Coaching involves grooming and encouraging participants about their abilities to perform this function. The study identified specific findings regarding what types of individuals can provide coaching to physicians and be well received. The credibility, expertise and trustworthiness of the person doing the persuading are of critical importance in this coaching process. In addition, the study also identified when and how the coaching to physician trainees should be conducted in order to obtain the optimal results.
Coaching helps the trainee strengthen his belief that he has the ability to provide high quality clinical documentation. This is achieved by incorporating repeated opportunities for guidance, encouragement, and corrective feedback into the process. To tailor the specific focus of the training, each organization should use the results of its self-efficacy questionnaire (included on the resource CD) to customize the coaching component of its training program.
The specific coaching components and timing of the components within the training program are described in this chapter and the appendices of volume 2 of A Compelling Case for Clinical Documentation.
